Mayor Mayo and City Engineer to Secure Funds for Major Flood Relief Project
In Baton Rouge today, Mayor Jamie Mayo and City Engineer Kim Golden went before the
State Joint Legislative Committee to secure state support and funding for an estimated $6.8M
80-acre retention pond project along Youngs Bayou. The project will help reduce flooding that
threatens approximately 1300 residential homes, public buildings or commercial structures in
the area near West Parkview, Benoit Community Center, Wossman High School, and Booker T.
Washington subdivision areas in Monroe.
Mayor Jamie Mayo says, “This project will provide the same type of flood relief and prevention
that the Rochelle Street rentention pond did near the Garden District. Once constructed, the
Youngs Bayou retention pond will provide peace of mind for home/business owners, curches,
and schools in the West Pakrview/Benoit, Wossman High School, and Booker T. Washington
areas in Monroe. We appreciate Senator Francis Thompson and Representative Katrina Jackson
for helping lead this effort in Baton Rouge.”
