The purpose of the Engineering Department is multifaceted. It encompasses the design, construction, maintenance, and regulation of vital infrastructural elements such as roads, bridges, drainage/sewer/water systems, and private/public developments. However, beyond the visible components of the City of Monroe – the Engineering Department is dedicated in its effort to provide a quality environment that fosters growth and safety for all residents and businesses.

Recent Accomplishments

Efficiency

Improved the efficiency of operations and processes within the department by addressing specific needs in communication, organization, and resource allocation.

Infrastructure Development

Cultivated and procured beneficial professional partnerships for planning, designing, and constructing new infrastructure projects, and the maintenance of existing infrastructure and inventory, to meet the needs of the community.

My Government Online (MGO)

Collected feedback from users and stakeholders to identify successes, challenges, and areas for improvement. Used this information to establish a new and evolving internal operating procedure that continues to improve the application and permitting process.

Staff Expansion and Succession Planning

Examined current personnel structure and developed job descriptions/requisitions to meet the demands of current projects and future growth projections, while also implementing succession plans to ensure continuity and knowledge transfer within the department.

Workforce Development

Invested time and funds in the professional development and training of department staff to enhance their skills, knowledge, and capabilities.

Implement best practices in project management to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

Community and Economic Development

Continue to improve on the permitting procedure to expedite project application processing for residential and commercial development

Infrastructure Development and Maintenance

Prioritize infrastructure projects based on community needs, safety considerations, and available resources.

Innovation and Technology

Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the department through research, pilot projects, and training.

Safety and Resilience

Revisit emergency preparedness plans and resilience strategies to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters and other threats to infrastructure.
